Editorial Policy

Last updated July 8, 2026

Legal AI Insight is an independent publication providing reviews, comparisons, and analysis of artificial intelligence tools for the legal profession. This policy describes how we evaluate products, score them, maintain editorial independence, and handle accuracy and corrections.

Review methodology

Our reviews are built on direct evaluation of each product. We assess every legal AI tool against a consistent set of criteria designed to reflect the priorities of legal professionals evaluating AI adoption. Our process includes:

  • Product evaluation. We assess each tool using vendor-provided documentation, product demonstrations, trial accounts, and where possible, hands-on testing with representative legal workflows.
  • Vendor briefings. We conduct structured briefings with vendor product and engineering teams to understand capabilities, roadmap, and limitations.
  • Market context. We consider each product in the context of its competitive landscape, including direct alternatives, emerging competitors, and relevant market trends.
  • Reader needs. We evaluate tools against the practical requirements of legal professionals — law firm partners, in-house counsel, legal operations directors, and legal technologists — who are making purchasing and implementation decisions.

Scoring criteria

Every product we review is scored across five weighted categories. Each category is scored on a 1-to-5 scale (see below), and we disclose the individual category scores alongside an overall weighted score.

  • Features and functionality (30% weight). The breadth, depth, and quality of the tool's core capabilities. Does it deliver on its promises? How comprehensive is its feature set for its intended use case? How does it handle edge cases?
  • Pricing and value (25% weight). The cost structure relative to the value delivered. Is pricing transparent? How does it compare to competitors? Is there a free tier or trial? What is the total cost of ownership?
  • Ease of use and onboarding (20% weight). The learning curve, user interface quality, onboarding experience, and time to productivity. Can a legal professional become proficient without extensive training?
  • Customer support and training (15% weight). The quality, availability, and responsiveness of vendor support. What training resources are available? Is there dedicated customer success support for implementation?
  • Security and compliance (10% weight). Data handling practices, security certifications, compliance with relevant legal industry standards (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA where applicable), and data residency options.

Scoring scale

We use a 1-to-5 star scale for each scoring category and for overall ratings:

  • 5 stars — Exceptional. Best-in-class performance. The tool sets the standard in this category and delivers consistently excellent results with minimal limitations.
  • 4 stars — Very good. Strong performance with only minor limitations. The tool is a top contender in this category and meets the needs of most legal professionals.
  • 3 stars — Good. Solid performance that meets expectations. The tool is competent but has notable limitations or areas where competitors outperform it.
  • 2 stars — Fair. Below-average performance with significant limitations. The tool may be suitable for specific use cases but falls short of what most legal professionals would expect.
  • 1 star — Poor. Substandard performance. The tool has serious deficiencies that limit its practical value for legal professionals.

Independence standards

Our editorial process is designed to ensure complete independence from commercial relationships:

  • Editorial decisions are made first. Reviews and scores are completed before any commercial or affiliate discussions with a vendor.
  • No pay-for-play. Vendors cannot pay for favorable reviews, higher scores, or specific rankings. No amount of advertising or partnership revenue influences our assessments.
  • Editorial firewall. Our editorial team operates independently from our business operations. Vendors and advertisers do not have access to or influence over editorial content before publication.
  • Equal treatment. We apply the same methodology and scoring criteria to every product, regardless of whether we have an affiliate or advertising relationship with the vendor.

Accuracy standards

We work to get things right the first time. Our accuracy standards require:

  • verifying pricing, features, and capabilities directly with vendor documentation or representatives;
  • noting the date of our last verification, since products change frequently;
  • distinguishing confirmed facts from analysis, opinion, and projections;
  • updating reviews when we learn of material changes to a product's features, pricing, or capabilities; and
  • disclosing any limitations in our testing methodology where applicable.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it promptly and transparently. If you believe we have published an error — an incorrect price, a misstated feature, an inaccurate comparison — please tell us. See our Corrections Policy for the full process.

Handling vendor relationships

We maintain professional relationships with legal AI vendors for the purpose of gathering accurate product information. These relationships are governed by the following rules:

  • Vendor access to our editorial content is limited to published material; vendors do not preview or approve reviews before publication.
  • We accept no gifts, meals, or hospitality from vendors that exceed nominal value (under $50).
  • Vendors may request corrections of factual errors, which we review through the same process as reader corrections.
  • We disclose any material financial relationship with a vendor in the relevant article.

Review updates and refreshes

The legal AI market evolves rapidly. We commit to reviewing and refreshing our product reviews on a regular cadence — at minimum every six months for actively covered products — and whenever a vendor makes a material change to features, pricing, or capabilities. Updated reviews are clearly marked with the date of the most recent revision.
